Freres Lumber Company Joins the Portland Art Museum in Celebrating Architect John Yeon

May 22, 2017

Freres Lumber Company is excited to announce our partnership with the Portland Art Museum in their upcoming exhibition, Quest for Beauty: the Architecture, Landscapes, and Collections of John Yeon, opening May 13, 2017!

As a pioneer of the Northwest Regional style of Modernism of the 1930-1940s, Yeon’s bold architectural designs were inspired by a holistic view of the environment, influences from European and Asian architecture, and his appreciation of the high-quality local materials found in the Pacific Northwest. The museum will present Yeon’s innovative design concepts and his long and varied career inside an exhibit space created by the award-winning Portland firm, Lever Architecture, with Freres Lumber Company’s Mass Ply Panels, manufactured at our plant in Lyons, Oregon, being a featured component of their design.

The use of plywood as a construction material provided a groundbreaking approach to architecture in Yeon’s affordable, modular homes and Freres Lumber Company is honored to play a part in showcasing this visionary’s choice in building materials.

The exhibit will include custom-built tables constructed with our new Mass Ply Panel to be used in a display featuring a collection of decorative art on loan from the University of Oregon’s John Yeon Center for Architecture. Kaufman Homes and Smalltown Wood will provide the artistic finish carpentry details on the display and assemble the exhibit for the museum.

Later this summer a plywood housing design event will be held in the museum’s courtyard in conjunction with the exhibition and Freres Lumber Company.
