Rolling Stock Mechanic Trainee

Rolling Stock (Heavy-duty) Mechanic Trainee reports directly to the CAT Shop Manager.
Rolling Stock (Heavy-duty) Mechanic Trainee learn to assist in inspecting, repairing and maintaining diesel and gas rolling stock. They learn to assist in maintaining and repairing electrical systems, air systems, heating and cooling systems, brake systems, suspensions, steering systems, engines and transmissions. This is not a remote or hybrid position. Onsite work will always be required.

Essential Functions

• Ability to learn to accurately analyze and diagnose equipment issues and breakdowns.
• Ability to recommend possible service actions to resolve equipment performance problems.
• Ability to learn to make appropriate equipment repairs or modifications to solve operating and performance concerns as dictated by diagnosis.
• Observe all safety procedures, make certain that hazardous waste is properly handled.
• Provide well-maintained personal tools required to effectively perform required duties.
• Perform other department responsibilities as assigned.

Other Responsibilities

Responsibilities are not limited to the above-mentioned and may include assisting other branches with reasonable and related tasks.

Physical Demands

• Work is performed in a maintenance environment with potential hazards that require knowledge of proper safety procedures.
• Standing or sitting for prolonged periods-of-time; Walking, Lifting, Carrying, Balancing, Stooping, Reaching, Handling, Feeling, Communicating, Acuity-Far, Acuity-Near, Depth     Perception, and Field of Vision.
• Must be able to work in a maintenance/shop environment, while also being able to navigate each plant and/or department facilities
• Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Qualifications

• Good analytical, problem-solving skills and resourceful thinking
• Effectively communicate verbally and in writing with co-workers and management.
• Secondary school graduate with a minimum of three years of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic experience preferred. May include equivalent college or vocational school education.
• Demonstrate strong mechanical and electrical aptitude.
• Has the ability to understand the necessary service manuals, including interpretation of schematics and effective use of electronic diagnostic tools.
• Keep pace with industry innovations and advancements.
• Safely operate power tools, lifts, hoists, hydraulic jacks and overhead cranes.
• The ability to perform strenuous work, including objects occasionally weighing up to 100 pounds and frequently as much as 50 pounds.
• Possess physical stamina to perform continuously with full body motion for climbing, pushing, lifting, reaching, etc.
• Positive and Excellent Interpersonal and Customer Service skills
• Ability to act with integrity, reliability and professionalism
• Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and strong time management skills.
• Computer skills to work in Excel, Word, Outlook are a plus
• Analytically driven
• Must be flexible and adaptable and handle multiple tasks while managing efficiently and effectively
• Excellent team member with the ability to work collaboratively and maintain effective working relationships with CAT Shop Manager, owners, co-workers, customers and vendors
