Mass Ply Panels Form Roof of Local Winery’s Outdoor Pavilion
Domaine Willamette is the newest addition to Willamette Valley Vineyards’ (WVV) budding collection of tasting rooms and estate vineyards. Though WVV is celebrated for its award-winning Pinot Noirs, their latest location is the state’s first sparkling wine facility, featuring an underground aging cellar devoted to crafting world-class méthode traditionnelle sparkling wines.
“We’re proud to be representing the innovation that’s occurring in Oregon for our environment,” says Jim Bernau, CEO and founder of Willamette Valley Vineyards
WVV’s latest facility also includes a stunning outdoor pavilion that sits among thoughtfully landscaped gardens, grand views of Mount Hood, and rows of Oregon grapevines. But more than beautiful, Domaine Willamette is a reflection of WVV’s steadfast commitment to environmental stewardship.

Founders Jim and Jan Bernau approached the design of Domaine Willamette with the same care they bring to winemaking. They incorporated sustainable materials and biophilic elements to create a space that would blend seamlessly with the landscape. Among these key design choices, the Bernaus selected Freres Engineered Wood’s Mass Ply Panels (MPP) for the pavilion’s eye-catching roofline.“We’re proud to be representing the innovation that’s occurring in Oregon for our environment,” says Jim Bernau.

While MPP provided a myriad of construction benefits, including faster installation and reduced labor costs, its environmental performance was even more compelling. Unlike traditional building materials such as concrete and steel, Mass Ply sequesters carbon, requires less energy to manufacture, and generates fewer greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, the MPP used for Domaine Willamette stored roughly 60 metric tons of carbon dioxide.
“Stewardship of the land has been a foundational value for us since the winery started in 1983 and why we [considered] sustainability in the choice of building materials [for] Domaine Willamette,” says Jim Bernau.

Domaine Willamette opened its doors in 2022, unveiling a space of striking natural beauty, second only to the land it was designed to honor. The pavilion’s modern roofline with exposed Mass Ply mirrors the gentle slopes of the Bernau Estate Vineyard, and floor-to-ceiling windows fill the tasting room with light, as guests enjoy top-tier sparkling wines.
