We believe wood products should do more than meet structural codes. They should meet creative visions. That’s why we introduced four new architectural-grade mass timber finishes for our Mass Ply Panels (MPP), offering a fresh set of tools for architects and builders who want more from mass timber.
First revealed at the 2025 International Mass Timber Conference, these grades bring new flexibility to architectural design without sacrificing what Mass Ply does best: strength, sustainability, and precision.
New MPP Appearance Grades
For too long, mass timber has had one aesthetic: the look of traditional sawn lumber. But with more architects and engineers embracing MPP for its performance advantages, the demand for visual variety has grown louder—and more specific.
We listened. Then we got to work.
These four new appearance grades were developed to respond to design trends, meet marketplace demands, and provide more creative options for both interior and exterior applications. The result is a collection of architectural-grade finishes that enhance beauty without compromising buildability.
Explore the Grades
We showcased each of these grades at IMTC 2025 with full-size 8’ x 16’ panels. Here’s what’s new:
Natural Board Face
With its classic wood texture and small closed knots, this grade mimics the familiar look of CLT. We orient the MPP veneers into 9.5″ wide boards, offering a warm, natural, and approachable finish while maintaining the strength and stability of Mass Ply.
Clear Board Face
Designed for cleaner visual lines and contemporary aesthetics, this finish uses clear veneer with minimal knots. Each board is sanded and puttied to ensure a smooth, sleek surface that’s perfect for high-end interiors or exposed structural elements.
Edge Grain
One of our most talked-about options, Edge Grain puts the internal structure of MPP on display. By turning the panel and revealing its layers from the side, we showcase the intricate beauty of thin veneer lamination. The result is a dynamic, stripe-like pattern that’s unlike anything else on the market.
Shou Sugi Ban
Rooted in a centuries-old Japanese tradition of wood preservation, our pre-burned Shou Sugi Ban panels offer a rich, charred finish that stands out in both appearance and potential performance. Often used for siding or architectural detailing, this grade is gaining traction for its natural resistance to moisture, rot, and insects—and it’s currently undergoing further testing for long-term exterior durability.
Compatible With Our Full Mass Ply System
These appearance-grade panels aren’t standalone—they’re designed to integrate seamlessly with our full line of Mass Ply Laminated (MPL) beams and columns. That means you can achieve cohesive aesthetics across entire buildings, from structure to surface.
We offer panel thicknesses ranging from 2.04″ to 12.24″, all PRG-320 certified and built to meet rigorous structural demands. With appearance grades now part of the equation, Mass Ply can do even more—visually and functionally.
